What is Gambling You Ask?

Due to perceive social costs, many countries and all religions declare gambling as illegal and immoral. When a person invests money in a business, which can either soar up or sink down, he is gambling with his money. In business investments, the higher are the potential gains, the higher are the risks. The same holds true in most gambling games, particularly in poker. That is, the bigger is the amount to be won in the pot, the bigger are the bets (risks) taken by the poker players.

Therefore, where does society stand on the issue of gambling? There are several conflicting views today, as there will be in the future. For some people, gambling will be addictive and can result to irrecoverable losses. For others, gambling is a form of entertainment. And like all forms of entertainment, a person can be addicted to it. That is, a person can be addicted to playing poker, just as he can become addicted to reading science fiction or eating chocolates. This implies that a person’s addiction, whether it be gambling or other forms, depends on the psychological make-up of a person.

Still, to make allowances for the negative connotations of gambling, people who set up online casinos resort to the use of the term “gaming”, instead of gambling. A few governments have recognized the potential revenues of the gambling industry and so they set up their own “gaming activities” or coordinate with gambling organizations.

As for the individual, the decision to get involved in gambling or online gaming is a personal one. But it must be done consciously.
